🌙 WHAT HAPPENED WHILE YOU SLEPT

Trump said no. Oil heard him.

President Trump said Saturday he had rejected Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end fighting within seven days (Reuters). Sunday evening, Brent rose as much as 2% to $106.29 and WTI climbed toward $94, while S&P futures fell 25 points and Dow futures dropped more than 160 (CNBC TV18).

The numbers: Iran's terms, per Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi: the US lifts its blockade of Iranian ports, releases frozen funds and waives oil sanctions. Trump told reporters, "I reject their proposal." The Wall Street Journal reported he sees a renewed bombing campaign as likely after the November midterms (Reuters). On NBC's Meet the Press, Araqchi said Iran is "fully prepared for the war to be resumed… even if it comes to a doomsday war," while leaving diplomacy open (Al Jazeera). Friday, Brent had settled at $104.32 (−2.1%) and WTI at $92.41 (−2.3%) on truce hopes (Reuters).

Why it matters: Oil is still the first domino for a long-term portfolio. Expensive energy can keep inflation sticky, which keeps the Fed hiking, which keeps mortgage rates and bond-fund prices under pressure. Friday's stock rally partly bet on a proposal. Proposals aren't deals.

What to watch: Whether Brent holds above Friday's $104.32 settle at the open, and any formal reply through Qatari mediators. Trump told Axios he expects talks to continue this week (CNBC TV18).

🔑 3 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE THE OPEN

Monday edition: the three dates that matter this week.

1. PCE lands Wednesday at 8:30 AM ET.

August personal income and outlays, including the PCE price index (the Fed's preferred inflation gauge), arrive Wednesday with the third estimate of Q2 GDP, per BEA.

Why it matters: When headlines say "inflation," the Fed's own scorecard is this number. Your mortgage quote and bond fund both trade on how the market reads it.

2. Friday's jobs report is the Fed's last look.

September employment situation is out Friday, Oct 2, at 8:30 AM ET, per BLS. It's the last full jobs report before the Fed meets Oct 27–28.

Why it matters: Labor and PCE are the two big inputs left before the October decision. Rate-sensitive corners of an S&P 500 fund will hear both.

3. Micron reports Wednesday after the close.

Micron hosts its fiscal Q4 call at 4:30 PM ET Wednesday (company release). Nike reports Thursday after the close.

Why it matters: Your index fund owns both the AI memory cycle and a squeezed consumer brand. This week you get a report card on each.

📈 CHART OF THE DAY

The S&P just won its first week in three. For context, the index closed Friday at 7,743.41, up 1.2% on the week and within 0.7% of last month's record (AP). Notice how little of that relief survived a weekend of oil headlines.

⚡ QUICK HITS

  • Stocks: Friday's bounce was broad enough for the Dow (+0.93%) and Nasdaq (+0.48%), but the Russell 2000 still lost 0.8% on the week (AP). Small caps didn't get the memo.

  • Crypto: Bitcoin was about $83,415 and Ether about $2,653 near 11:48 PM ET Sunday, each down more than 1% versus their 24-hour opens (Coinbase). Rate-hike talk and oil both stayed in the room.

  • Oil plumbing: Saudi crude exports reached 6 million barrels a day in September, up from 3.4 million in August, per Kpler (CNBC TV18). The East-West pipeline is ramping on low volumes, industry sources told Reuters.

  • Economy: More Fed speakers this week, including Chicago's Austan Goolsbee and New York's John Williams on Tuesday, and Dallas's Lorie Logan on Friday (CNBC TV18).

  • Wildcard: Q3 on the calendar ends Wednesday. Window-dressing week meets oil week. Quiet, it won't be.

🧠 EXPLAIN LIKE I'M BUSY

What is the Strait of Hormuz, and why does your 401(k) care?

It's a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman. Before this year's war, about 20% of the world's oil moved through it (Reuters / EIA context in industry coverage). When it clogs, crude gets expensive, gasoline and diesel follow, inflation sticks around, and the Fed has less room to ease. You don't ship oil. You do own the second-order effects in an index fund and a mortgage rate.
